OSTEOARTHRITIS IN THE KNEES CAN CAUSE CHRONIC PAIN AND AFFECT YOUR MOBILITY

Osteoarthritic knee pain can significantly impact your quality of life, making everyday activities like walking, climbing stairs, and sleeping uncomfortable or even unbearable.
If you’re suffering from debilitating knee pain, you may have tried medications, injections, physical therapy, or braces, only to find them ineffective or that relief is temporary.
Are you looking for pain relief without committing to the invasiveness and downtime of knee replacement surgery? Are you still suffering from knee pain, even after having knee replacement surgery? Are you not a candidate for knee replacement surgery?
The GAE procedure may be a great solution for you.
What is GAE (Geniculate Artery Embolization)?

Geniculate Artery Embolization (GAE) is a minimally invasive, image-guided procedure designed to relieve chronic knee pain caused by osteoarthritis. Rather than replacing the knee joint, GAE targets the underlying inflammation that contributes to pain and stiffness.
At Milford Vascular Institute, GAE is performed right in our outpatient suite by our endovascular surgeons, Dr. Paul Davis and Dr. David Esposito. They use advanced imaging to precisely treat the small arteries around the knee that fuel inflammation.
In osteoarthritis, abnormal blood vessels develop around the knee joint and sustain ongoing inflammation and pain. By closing off these abnormal vessels, GAE helps reduce inflammation and significantly relieve chronic knee pain.
This is done through a tiny blood vessel puncture in your groin or foot, under light anesthesia. It requires no incision and no surgery.
How Does The GAE Procedure Work?
Osteoarthritis at the knee joint causes a cycle of increased pain and increased inflammation at the knee. The inflammation fuels an increase of tiny blood vessels that should not be there, and they are considered abnormal.
As these abnormal blood vessels continue to grow and become more and more inflamed, you feel more and more pain around the knee.
In order to stop this cycle of pain and inflammation, these abnormal blood vessels need to be blocked off so blood cannot circulate within them and fuel them. That is exactly what the GAE procedure does.
WHAT HAPPENS DURING THE GAE PROCEDURE

Through a tiny blood vessel puncture in your groin or foot, a catheter is inserted and guided through your genicular artery. Using ultrasound guidance, our vascular surgeons can see exactly where these abnormal blood vessels are located around your knee. The catheter is guided to this location, and microscopic particles are injected in order to cut off blood supply to these abnormal blood vessels.
Without blood supply, these blood vessels shrink away and can no longer cause you pain and inflammation. Following the GAE procedure, patients have reported significant pain relief and renewed mobility.
WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF HAVING THE GAE PROCEDURE?
Are You a Candidate for the GAE Procedure?

GAE is not for everyone with knee pain, it is a specialized treatment designed for select patients with knee osteoarthritis.
Eligibility depends on your symptoms, medical history, and treatment goals.
The best way to know for sure is to have a GAE consultation with our vascular specialists to understand your unique knee pain and diagnosis.

GAE Procedure FAQs
Below are answers to common questions about Geniculate Artery Embolization (GAE):
Geniculate Artery Embolization (GAE) is a nonsurgical procedure used to treat chronic knee pain from osteoarthritis. It targets small blood vessels around the knee that fuel inflammation, helping reduce pain without joint replacement surgery.
GAE does not involve removing or replacing the knee joint. Instead, it targets inflammation at its source and is performed through a tiny access point in the groin or wrist, allowing for a much shorter recovery and significantly less downtime compared to knee replacement surgery.
Most patients experience little to no pain during the procedure. Local anesthesia and light sedation are used, and any discomfort afterward is usually mild and temporary, often limited to soreness at the access site.
Some patients have reported feeling knee pain relief immediately after the procedure, while others notice an improvement over the course of a few days or weeks.
GAE is carefully designed to target only the abnormal blood vessels that develop as part of chronic inflammation in knee osteoarthritis. These small vessels are not essential for normal knee function and are different from the main arteries that supply healthy bone, muscle, and joint tissue. Normal blood supply to healthy knee structures is preserved, and serious circulation problems are rare.
GAE is considered safe when performed by experienced specialists, but as with any medical procedure, there are potential risks. These may include bruising, temporary discomfort, or inflammation at the access site, which will be discussed in detail during your visit.
Coverage varies depending on your insurance plan and medical necessity. Our team will help review your benefits and discuss coverage options during your consultation.
